Financial Literacy- A Year in Review

What a year 2020 was… Despite many challenges, we all leapt into the future, becoming virtual in so many ways. So did CFA Boston’s Financial Literacy Initiative, thanks to the contributions of our volunteers. Our recent activity demonstrates the public’s ongoing need for more financial knowledge.
Our volunteers quickly adapted to teaching via Zoom. We were surprised and pleased to find that many elements of virtual presentations seemed to work better than in person presentations. As a result we expect them to be a part of our core offering going forward. Thanks to our alliance leaders for cultivating new and ongoing relationships with diverse organizations, helping us reach a wide range of audiences around Boston. Here are the new and ongoing alliances where we presented virtually this year:
  • May - Year Up
  • June - ICA
  • July - Tenacity
  • July - Harvard Medical School
  • August - Liberty Mutual
  • November - Root North Shore
  • November - Summer Search
  • November - Southwick Library
During this tumultuous time we were able to expand our alliances. With Summer Search Boston we did a weekly four-part series in November titled “Make it Make Cents” over Zoom for 15 of their post-grad students. Summer Search even added an extra incentive to those who attended to win a raffle for a $50 gift certificate from Fidelity. The audience was engaged throughout and the final session went for an extra half hour due to the high level of participation. They are looking forward to collaborating again for another series in the spring on an even wider range of topics. Summer Search staff stated “You provided our students with an amazing series. The students seemed very appreciative of the information. I even received feedback from a few staff members who found the recordings helpful for their personal lives.”
In another virtual medium, we did our first FinLit presentation on Youtube, in collaboration with our long-standing alliance, Junior Achievement. Why is the stock market up when the economy is down?
Our initiative fulfills an important mission. We’re uniquely positioned to help close the Financial Literacy gap, improving the lives of our audiences and economic equity throughout Boston. Thank you all for your support - without it we couldn't have impact at the scale we have.
